Reliable, worry-free stopping power and easy maintenance. I wouldn't hype them in a mulitparagraph post on Reddit if they weren't that great. Sure they're a little heavier than the performance brands/models but they work really really well, reliably and worry free. whereas, i've got 3 bikes with 3 different generations of Shimano XT brakes (M765, M775 and M785) and aside from what i mentioned above, they had the pads changed when they were worn and the rear caliper of the 765s blew a seal after 5 years of intense use but that is it.
It's also worth mentioning that i had really really bad luck with both sets of Avid Hydraulics that i've owned and everyone that i know that has ever ran anything that wasn't Shimano's seemed like they took up a new hobby in brake tuning and maintenance. This doesn't happen that often but is worth mentioning. As long as the calipers were centered when the were installed that can be corrected by simply pushing the pad that's rubbing back away from the rotor. sometimes, the brake pads won't retract completely and will brush the rotor and constantly making a slight noise which can be distracting on long uphills but that's not really problem as much as it is a nuisance. except fir speed control, hydraulics do that very very well.Īs far as maintenance goes, Bleeding the air out of the lines or changing the hydraulic oil about once a year if you ride a lot is all that's really needed. out on the trail, they have the same issues, or potentials issues, that cable-pull brakes do. i really don't do anything to them to prepare for ride outside of inspect the pads for where and squeeze the levers to confirm that they are working but that's it. In my experience, Hydraulics, particularly the Shimano's, have been significantly LESS maintenance and worry. I had the same concerns when i went to hydraulics from cable pulls.
